From research, the countless properties of Lactoferrin

From 1939, when it has been first identified by Sorensen in cow’s milk, lactoferrin has now been found to have numerous properties, including antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties, as well as prebiotic properties that affect the intestinal and skin microbiota. Lactoferrin is a very small glycoprotein – 703 amino acids with iron-transporting and immune-enhancing properties – derived from milk. It is present in large quantities in colostrum, which is very important for the protection of newborns, but also in the adult organism, where it is part of neutrophilic white blood cells, and in which it flows through plasma, tears and saliva.

DEMONSTRATED PROPERTIES

Lactoferrin optimises the immune system

Lactoferrin is therefore an ancestral protection molecule that optimises and intervenes early in support of the human and animal immune system, regulating and controlling certain substances that defence cells (granulocytes and lymphocytes) sometimes release excessively in the event of illness, and which cause symptoms such as persistent fever, pain and sometimes tissue damage.

Antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal

The main function of lactoferrin, or lactotransferrin, is that of iron homeostasis, i.e. transporting and regulating the concentration of iron in the body. It binds to iron and transports it from the intercellular junction, where it is exchanged between one cell and another, to the blood and vice versa.

It is anti-viral and anti-bacterial: iron binding removes iron from body fluids, preventing it from being a vector for many viruses, particularly respiratory viruses, and some bacteria.

This process has proved effective against Herpes simplex, cytomegalovirus, coronavirus and HIV; it has also proved important in the fight against certain mycoses, such as those caused by Candida.
